7 Super-Simple Camping Hacks

Few outdoor activities can be as relaxing and rejuvenating as a camping trip. Sometimes it's just nice to get away from it all and spend some quality time out in nature. Of course, life away from everyday conveniences has its own set of challenges. Fortunately, camping hacks are a great way to make life in the outdoors a little easier and more enjoyable. In this post, I'm sharing seven of my favorite, super-simple camping hacks.

1. Shoo Fly

Citronella candles aren't cheap, but wild sage is abundant (and free) in many regions. Burning bundles of sage or sagebrush can help repel mosquitoes. Some people also find the smell of burning sage more pleasant than citronella.

2. Puzzle Pieces

Kneeling on the hard ground underneath your tent can be pretty uncomfortable. Grab some jig-saw foam tiles (the kind made for children's play rooms) to create a cozier living space inside your tent. The tiles are light and easy to transport. You can even cut them to fit your tent floor.

3. Glowing Idea

Finding items inside the cooler after dark can be a hassle if you forget to grab your flashlight first. Make everyone's life a little easier by tossing a glow stick inside your cooler at night for simple, hassle-free illumination.

4. Bottle It

Ice cubes can make a big mess inside your cooler. Instead, use frozen bottles of water. You won't have to worry about water saturating your food. You can also drink the water once the bottles have melted. Refreshing!

5. Baking Prep

Love fresh pancakes or Dutch oven cobbler around the campfire? Pre-measure, mix and store dry ingredients together inside a large mason jar (leaving extra room). At camp, just add your wet ingredients to the jar, stir and you're ready to cook. No mixing bowl needed.

6. Tree Hugger

First, cinch a belt around a tree (webbing belts work best). Next, hang a few large S-hooks from the belt to create an instant camp site organizer. Now you can easily hang clothing, backpacks and other essentials off the ground.

7. Go Bag

Bring along a few extra plastic grocery bags. Use these to store wet, dirty and muddy shoes. This will help keep your other gear (and your car) clean when it's time to pack up and head home.

No tent? Take along a 10-12' L x 8' wide light weight tarp, and some Of that colorful light weight rope. No poles needed! To set up. Find a suitable site near some trees. Now, find a few stones the size of a walnut, find the center of the 8' width, hold the stone on the underside of the tarp about 3" in from the edge, using a simple square knot, tie it so to trap the stone in the tarp, next tie the rope to a tree. Repeat at the other end. Anchore the corners. No trees, always bring a good walking stick, it has many uses!
