How to adjust Chacos for a snug, comfortable fit

Chacos sandals are a summer staple, especially if you spend a lot of time on the trails or in the water. If you're new to Chaco footwear, you might not realize that these sport sandals can be adjusted around your entire foot -- not just at the buckle. The webbing strap is a single piece that runs through the sole of the sandal, allowing you to pull it to get the right fit in all the right places. Loosening your sandals


  1. Pull on the buckle to loosen the strap all the way.
  2. Loosen the top strap (nearest your toes) by pulling it from the end that is closest to the outside of your foot.
  3. Loosen the strap that starts at your pinky toe and runs toward the inside of your foot by pulling the end closest to your toes.
  4. Now that each portion of the strap is loosened, step into your Chacos.

Tightening your sandals


  1. Tighten the strap that runs from your pinky toe to the inside of your foot by pulling the very top webbing from the point that is closest to your big toe.
  2. Tighten the strap that runs diagonal across the base of your toes by pulling the piece that feeds into the buckle. Pull from the part of the strap closest to the inside of your foot.
  3. Pull the strap that runs through the buckle to make the final adjustment.

  4. Pull the strap that runs through the buckle to make the final adjustment.

To adjust Chacos that have double or triple straps, follow the same steps, pulling the double or triple portions of the straps at the same time as if they were one.

There is no question that Chaco sandals are annoying to adjust. The straps are tough to manipulate when new and it only gets harder when the channels and straps get age and dirt enters the system. I've had some luck with WD40 to loosen things up. Olive oil may work too. But don't be discouraged. This is a set-it-and-forget-it sandal. Once you get everything set for your foot, you rely on the simple buckle to put them on and take them off. And it's worth the up-front effort because, once they're set for your foot, Chaco's are the best sandal...period.

I just got a pair of double strap chacos with a toe loop. I adjusted everything to fit my foot, BUT the heel strap doesn't adjust! All the slack doesn't have anywhere to go. The heel strap is sewn in and doesn't move, so my heel comes off the shoe with every step! How do I fix that?

what if the straps on my new chacos are just too long. no matter how we adjust them they wont tighten. please get back to me...FYI, I LOVE CHACOS.
